Security. Love. Affection. Let’s wage a war about that. Not everyone can adopt, but we can all do something. Even if it’s just using our voices for something more productive than personal parenting choices.

Let’s stop quibbling about what competent mothers are choosing for their kids, and step it up for the kids that don’t have one.
”

-
Kristen Howerton: The Only Mommy War Worth Waging

But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

- Ira Glass (via nefffy)

Because I had to.
Obviously there’s some sort of Hollywood machination here that thinks this is a good idea. Clearly it’s about the money, and not preserving one of the best action movies ever made. I’m not jumping on the bandwagon that Point Break should be considered “sacred” by any means, but this really seems like lazy filmmaking.

Why “reboot” a movie like Point Break, when there are plenty of other franchises <strike>stealing</strike> using the successful high-intensity action formula? I hope this one just sits on the shelf leaving fans to wait for the next 50-year storm.

I was never a toprope climber, but watching videos about...

I was never a toprope climber, but watching videos about Yosemite are awe-inspiring. A couple of the other issues — darkness and “smallness” — are at least theoretically solvable. But the deeper problem is that the audience must focus their eyes at the plane of the screen — say it is 80 feet away. This is constant no matter what.

But their eyes must converge at perhaps 10 feet away, then 60 feet, then 120 feet, and so on, depending on what the illusion is. So 3D films require us to focus at one distance and converge at another. And 600 million years of evolution has never presented this problem before. All living things with eyes have always focussed and converged at the same point.
”

- Why 3D doesn’t work and never will.
